Clean up the Pin

Sunfish South Moreton will be conducting their 16th award winning annual Clean up the Pin project on the 22 May 2011 from 7.00am to 12 noon picking up rubbish from the Jumpinpin Islands.

Fishing clubs, boating clubs and members of the public are most welcome. If you have never travelled the waterways of Southern Moreton Bay by boat, now is the opportunity to do so and assist in picking up rubbish on one of the bay islands.

All persons are to meet at the Jacobs Well boat ramp for registration, safety and cleanup plan instructions. Everyone will need to bring their own suitable clothing and footware and personal protection from the sun and insects. Boats will take people to the various islands. Volunteers will walk the banks along the high tide mark of either Short, Crusoe, Stingaree (Kaninga Bank), Eden Islands, Tiger Mullet Channel, and Whalleys Gutter collecting rubbish in the bags provided, then placing them in a stack for the barge pickup.

Marine Park Rangers on the "MV Spoonbill" will pick up the rubbish and return them to the ramp at Jacobs Well for unloading into the 6metre skip bin. Each year we average 6 tonne of rubbish which is dissapointing considering all the advertising about bringing your rubbish back to the shore, and protecting the environment.

The project has the support of the Gold Coast City Council, Alvey Reels, Blue Fin Fishing Club Inc. Other authorities and businesess assisting on the day are the Department of Environment and Resource management (DERM), Marine Parks and Wildlife, VMR (Air Sea Rescue) and support organisations.

Persons using their own boats will be assisted in their fuel costs. Collection bags, sharps containers and some gloves will be supplied. An excellent barbcue and drinks will be available at the end of the morning.

Clean up the Pin Report

Sunfish South Moreton, Jacobs Well Fishing & Social Club and other volunteers carried out the 16th annual Clean up the Pin on 16 May 2010. We had 94 volunteers and they were transported to the various bay islands in a small landing barge owned by Councillor John Wayne, and by the skipper of the "Iron Mongrel" and other private boat owners.

There was the usual amount of glass and plastic bottles, plastic bags and bottles, pieces of rope and tangled fishing line, but the other rubbish collected was beyond belief. Volunteers collected portable loos, a 3m fibreglass dinghy, a highway traffic barrier (how it got in the water near Carouse Island is a mystery), two green navigational beacons (and they were quite a large item), a surfboard, home made steel barbecues and various sizes of timber, car batteries and a couple of old crab pots. One of my grandchildren picked up a bottle which had three dead crabs trapped inside. He said that was sad.

The 10m skip bin was overflowing with the rubbish. How difficult would it be for the individuals or families camping to bring their own rubbish back to the shore bins instead of us having to do this exercise each year?

Many thanks go to our major sponsor the Port of Brisbane Authority for the past three years of support, the Gold Coast City Council and local Councillors, Pope Products for the rubbish bags and other organisations who supported the event.

Every year we have had the support of the EPA Marine Parks who provide the MV Spoonbill to collect the rubbish bags from the islands pickup point and transport the lot back to the Jacobs Well boat ramp.

We collected over 6 tonne of rubbish, and that is a shame on the users of the Junpinpin waterways..

The morning will start at 7.00am and finigh around 1.00pm. All bags brought back to the ramp wil then be transferred to the big rubbish bin.

This is also provides a good opportunity for people who have never visited the bay islands to have an appreciation of the beauty in the area and why our branch has been most concerned over the past 15 years to try to keep the islands clean and healthy.

It promises to be a fun day finishing with a sausage sizzle and a talk about the experiences. Make sure you have protective clothing, hat, insect spray and good shoes and a pair of gloves for the event.
